KB, K/1R and 4/5M visit Taronga Zoo

Students at the Zoo

KB's Zoo Adventure!

On Thursday the 12th of March, KB experienced their first ever excursion to Sydney Taronga Zoo. This term, KB have been learning about the basic needs of living things and how these things grow and change over time. Our trip to the zoo was perfect for the students to extend their knowledge of animals and their needs. KB showed a particular interest around koalas so we made sure to visit these cute and cuddly animals on the day. The students enjoyed their time at the zoo and are looking forward to their next school excursion.

4/5M study owls, rainforests and meet Matt the Zoo Teacher

Zoo keeper and students

Thursday 12th March was one of the best days of my life! It was a very, very warm, sweaty, hot like flames coming out of a raging pepper day. 57 amazing students in KB, K1/R and 4/5M arrived at Taronga Zoo - the best zoo I have ever experienced - right next to Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

We have been learning about powerful owls and rainforests. At Taronga Zoo we met Matt and some reptiles that were in a fabulous rainforest classroom. It was like the same as a real rainforest, we saw a lizard, tortoise, frogs and pigeons. We saw some endangered animals (we saw a stone frog in a picture and we were told the Dreamtime story of Tidalik the frog. He sucked all the water from a lake and some animals tried to make him laugh and he finally laughed.) We also talked about bushfires and how bushfires are bad for the animals. After we saw some muddy elephants and naughty, loud chimpanzees. We finally walked out of the amazing Taronga Zoo and said goodbye.

On a breezy but also warm, beautiful day 57 excited and half asleep kids went to the biggest zoo I have ever seen. Taronga was the most beautiful zoo ever, with a stunning view of Sydney Harbour Bridge.

We saw and went to a classroom with an almost real looking rainforest with 6 different species on animals including the Nicobar pigeons, the bleeding heart pigeons, cotton top tamarins, salt water crocodile, a tortoise and a frog. 4/5M were learning about the Sumatran rainforest and Zoo teacher Matt told us a lot about deforestation, the clearing of forests and planting palm trees to make palm oil. Palm oil is used in shampoo, some chocolate and detergent.

We were searching and looking at different species of animals such as the koalas, stinky elephants, chimpanzees and the endangered but poisonous black and yellow frogs. We also saw the bird show with the barking owl, an eagle and the cockatoos.

4/5M, KB and K/1R went to Taronga Zoo and we saw endangered animals, chimpanzees, koalas and such cool classrooms with Matt the Zoo teacher. 45M went because we are learning about endangered animals such as the Powerful Owl. We also went on an airplane to Sumatra which was really cool. You could also see the Sydney Harbour and the weather was really warm so it was a really nice day for a trip to the zoo.

We had a workshop with Matt and the classroom wasn’t a normal classroom. It looked like a rainforest. It also had some animals that live in the rainforest but not crazy animals like tigers. We saw cute little monkeys called Cotton Top Tamarins, a bleeding heart pigeon and some other pigeons that can camouflage.

4/5M had an amazing time. It was great. Then we got back on the bus and got back to school just in time for the last lesson of the day.

There were 57 extremely excited students who woke up really early for the excursion. We went to Sydney Taronga Zoo. One of the best zoos in NSW. 4/5M, K/1R and KB went to the excursion on Thursday 12th of March, a very warm, sunny and beautiful day to go on an excursion. The things we saw at Taronga zoo was koalas, yellow frogs, different types of monkeys such as chimpanzees, a really cool classroom, a teacher named Matt, even our old teacher Miss Taylor, elephants and a bird show. The whole reason why 4/5M went to Taronga zoo is because we were learning about habitats, animals and environments around Australia and Sumatra.

Fact: Did you know that here are only 400 Sumatran tigers left in the Sumatran wild?
